Counselling and Educational Psychology in the Professional Context

The study investigates the impact of community engagement on educational psychology students at the University of Pretoria. Through a practicum, students developed essential skills in group dynamics, cultural competence, and professional adaptability. Participants reported increased self-confidence and a greater appreciation for diversity. The research underscores the necessity for educational psychologists to adapt traditional methodologies to meet the unique needs of South African communities, promoting preventative interventions and collaborative practices. This hands-on experience not only enhances students’ academic learning but also prepares them to address real-world challenges in diverse cultural contexts, ultimately benefiting both the students and the communities they serve.
